A ROSE WITHOUT THORNS
Beyond the Rainbow is the true story of Dr. Rose L. Tse, a retired physician of Internal Medicine and Rheumatology, who grew up in a China and came to the US for graduate school. She later made extensive contributions in organic chemistry and medicine.
After Rose attended Mt. Holoyoke for her masters degree, she entered Yale University and solved a problem that had baffled scientists for 36 years, when she discovered a structure for a thermochromic product from Anisilic acid. In 1953, she graduated from Yale with honors as its first female to receive a PhD in theoretical organic chemistry.
Rose later became a doctor and taught medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Her happiest moments occurred in 1972, when her family of 13 members – her parents, three brothers and their wives and children – joined her in America. She then gave up her many prominent positions so she would have more time to help each of them assimilate into the American culture.
